Luggage on NSW TrainLink services

Travel on any NSW TrainLink regional train and coach service includes a set luggage allowance, which varies depending on the type of ticket you bought.

Economy on Train:

  • One piece of hand luggage up to 10kg
  • One piece of large luggage no more than 20kg

First class on Train & Coach:

  • One piece of hand luggage up to 10kg
  • Up to two pieces of large luggage no more than 20kg per piece

When travelling on a connected train and coach journey, the greater luggage allowance provisions the whole journey.

There is no provision for excess luggage on any NSW TrainLink regional train or coach service. If your luggage exceeds the maximum allowance, it will be refused.

It is recommended you purchase travel insurance to cover your belongings during your trip.

What you can bring

You can carry on one item of hand luggage, such as a handbag, laptop bag or small backpack.

Hand luggage can weigh up to 10kg and must be no larger than 30cm high x 50cm long x 30cm wide.

Hand luggage is carried at your own responsibility.

Hand luggage must be stored under the seat in front. Hand luggage that does not fit under the seat must be stored in the luggage area at the end of the train carriage or luggage compartment under the coach.

Medication

Please carry all medication in hand luggage where you can reach it easily.

Each seat booked is permitted:

Economy on Train

  • One piece of large luggage no more than 20kg

First class on Train & Coach

  • Up to two pieces of large luggage no more than 20kg per piece.

Luggage must be sufficiently secured and protected. Personal luggage must be contained in a suitcase or bag.

Each item must weigh between 5-20kg and be no larger than 60cm high x 70cm long x 50cm wide.

Medium sized candy-striped bags containing clothing and soft items are accepted but must be 15kg or less.

Please do not carry valuables, important documents, money or fragile or perishable items in your large/heavy luggage.

You may carry-on or check-in your large and/or heavy luggage.

Check-in

You can check in large and/or heavy luggage at select attended stations and stops during opening hours. At most stations, luggage check-in is located near the booking office or waiting room. At Central Station in Sydney, the luggage collection and drop-off counter is next to the booking office on Platform 1.

Check in closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure.

Items weighing less than 5kg cannot be checked in.

Carry-on – trains only

If you do not check-in your large/heavy luggage, baggage taken on board the train must be stowed in the luggage area at the end of your carriage. Luggage carried on board are your own responsibility.

Baby strollers, prams, car seats and capsules, are counted within the permitted luggage allowance for the booked child.

Items are to be stowed in the luggage area.

Push bicycles are accepted on NSW TrainLink services.

With limited space available on each service, reservations are essential. A bicycle reservation is counted in addition to the customer luggage allowance.

Bicycle must be contained in a bicycle box to protect the bicycle. A bicycle box can be provided from bicycle retailers or provided on request. When packed no part of the bicycle is to protrude from the box. Boxes must not be torn or damaged. Ensure the item can be clearly identified with your name, address, origin, and destination.

  • The container needs to be less than 20 kg in weight to be accepted.

Folding bicycles

Folding bicycles can travel for free, however reservations are essential.

Folding bicycles must be packed in a protective cover and be no larger than 79cm long x 59cm high x 36cm wide.

With limited space available on each service, reservations are essential. Item reservation is counted in addition to the customer luggage allowance.

Surfboards, snowboards and skis

Surfboards, snowboards and skis with poles can travel as long as they are packed in a secure and protective bag. The bag or covering must not be torn or damaged. Ensure the item can be clearly identified with your name, address, origin, and destination.

Boogie boards and skateboards

Boogie boards are counted within the permitted luggage allowance.

Skateboards must be packed in a travel bag and are counted within the permitted luggage allowance. 

Sporting equipment can be included as part of your baggage allowance, subject to weight and dimension requirements. Each item is checked in as one piece.

Golf bags must be fully enclosed and have a secure hood/cover.

Items are to be stowed in the luggage area.

For safety reasons, equipment considered dangerous items will not be accepted onboard services, including compressed gas tanks, spears, crossbows or knives.

Collapsible wheelchairs, walking frames, crutches will be accepted in addition to the permitted luggage allowance. Items are to be stowed in the luggage area.

Customers using motorised scooters and wheelchairs are booked accordingly and must comply with certain dimensions, manoeuvrability and stability specifications. When booking a regional trip, plan ahead and be aware of accessible travel exceptions applied on NSW TrainLink services.

Musical instruments can travel with you in a protective case and included in your luggage allowance.

Size Storage

Maximum dimensions: 125cm high x 45cm wide x 20cm deep and weigh 20kg or less.

If you are travelling with a larger musical instrument, contact NSW TrainLink on 13 22 32 as you may need to purchase an additional seat.

Train

Musical instruments can be stored in the overhead racks or the luggage storage area at the end of your carriage.

Coach

Musical instruments must be placed in the luggage compartment under the coach.

What you cannot bring

For safety reasons, there are items that must not be included in checked or carry-on luggage.

Do not bring any of the following:

  • damaged or insufficiently secured and protected items
  • household items and appliances
  • plants and/or plant matter
  • unaccompanied luggage items
  • motor vehicles or motorbikes.

Additionally, the following are classified as dangerous goods and are banned:

  • compressed gases - flammable, non-inflammable and poisonous
  • corrosives - acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries
  • explosives - munitions, fireworks and flares
  • flammable liquids and solids - lighter fuel, matches, paints, thinners and fire-lighters
  • oxidising materials - bleaching powder and peroxides
  • poisons and infectious substances - insecticides, weed killers and live virus materials
  • firearms, spear guns, crossbows and knives
  • radioactive materials.

Things to know

Please collect your luggage items as soon as you arrive at your destination.

You can collect checked luggage by giving your luggage check-in receipt to staff at the departing station or stop.

Unclaimed luggage

Unclaimed luggage will be kept at the closest attended station. If it is not claimed within seven days, it will be sent to the luggage room at Central Station (Sydney).

If after a further two weeks luggage items are still not claimed, they will be sent to the lost property office.

Lost property or unclaimed bags left on a coach will be sent directly to the lost property office.

Lost property

If you leave something at a NSW TrainLink station or sales agent, it will be held there for seven days, and if it not claimed will be sent to the lost property office. Please fill out the online form to report lost property.

Storage services are available at Central Station for NSW TrainLink Regional customers at the luggage collection and drop-off counter on Platform 1.

Short term storage is available for NSW TrainLink customers with a ticket for travel on the same day. There is a charge of $4.40 for each item stored. No luggage will be accepted for storage overnight.
